VERY RARE WINCHESTER 1866 RIFLE
Description:
One of only about 3 made with special order cheek piece stock and half length magazine tube. All are in the high 30k serial range. This one and one other one used a regular full octagon barrel that was machined out for the magazine tube. They just left it that way. No sign of a barrel band or retaining ring ever being on it. With the forearm removed you can see the brilliant blue that stops right where the magazine cap stops. This gun has no doubt always had the half length mag tube. Interesting gun. They didn't know much about what they were doing way back then and it was pretty much experimental...trial and error. This is a lovely gun. The brass receiver, forend cap and buttplate have never been polished. They are a very deep mustard color. Crisp tight action. Original stock fits fully to the metal. Not sanded or undersized. Gun features better than average walnut stock with a considerable amount of original lacquer remaining. The barrel has turned a light blue/plum color. Sharp corners. Light barrel address. Rear sight slot is filled and gun has an early correct tang sight with external spring. Bright shiny bore. All matching numbers on frame, inside stock and buttplate.
