Winchester 1866 Octagon Barrel Rifle in 44 Henry - “The First Winchester“!
Description: Offered for your consideration is this fine 1866 Winchester rifle that was manufactured in New Haven, Connecticut in 1870. It has a 24 inch octagon barrel with a surprisingly good bore. The bore has scattered light frosting but no pitting that I can see. The rifling is complete, well defined and the rifling is still sharp. I’d rate the bore a strong 7+ on a 10 scale. The front sight is a German silver blade mounted in a dovetail base, the rear sight is the early Henry style Sporting Leaf Sight. The barrel and magazine tube have full coverage of a nice even blue gray patina with stronger traces of blue in the protected areas. The receiver has full coverage of the desirable aged bronze patina. It is mechanically excellent and cycles smoothly. The buttstock and forearm are tight, solid and in very good condition. They have numerous use and handling marks accumulated over 154 years but free of cracks and chips. The Buttplate and forend cap are in very nice condition and have the early Henry style sling swivels attached. Of the total 1866 production of 170,000 only approximately 28,000 were rifles. Most were carbines (127,000) and 15,000 muskets. All in all this is a rare, all original, and very attractive 1866 Winchester for your collection! Take a look at the photos for the best description. They were taken in natural light to give the best representation of the true finish and colors. If you’d like to see additional photos please specify the exact views you want and I’ll get them to your email. I’ll be glad to answer any questions you may have. $7,895.00 Payment by USPS money order preferred with shipping via USPS the next business day after receipt.
