Winchester Factory Engraved 1866 44 Rimfire
Description: Rock Island description... “Manufactured in 1871. The receiver is factory engraved with floral scroll, floral patterns, a decorative four corner scroll on each side and leaf designs. The left side of the receiver is inscribed: C.Wo.F.C./From/R.R.M." in the decorative scroll. The sides of the receiver have a double scallop border and there is a scallop border front and rear edges, as well as around the ejection port. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address/King's patent dates (partially obscured by a period filled dovetail) and the serial number appears on the lower tang. German silver blade front and folding ladder rear sights and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel on the forend cap and stock. The consignor notes state that the "RRM" may be the initials of R. McCabe, possibly a Editor for the Chicago Tribune. Writer was unable to locate any information…” Current description matches previous. Similarly, this seller’s contact with Chicago Tribune, internet sources and Cody Museum resulted in no information of value except for the Cody Museum explanation of serial numbers on 1866’s. The forwarded “Cody Firearms Records Office” listing (see photos) displays the only serial numbers Cody has, for early 1866’s. There are 23! That’s it! Serial number records then start, as normal, at 125000 and run to 170101. Stock and fore stock appear very good but have “barbed wire” dents, no deep scratches. Barbed wire marks came from using fore stock to hold the wire down to cross wire but nothing a hot iron and damp cloth can’t raise. There is a minor period repair to lower tang that I cannot detect. The stock has 4-piece cleaning rod that is probably original to rifle, according to previous owner. Rifle is very impressive, tight with sharp firing pin, 44 rim fire and would certainly fire a correct load, $100 cartridge, but I did not fire. Serial Number is 76442 (see photo). This rifle is a gem. Make offer, no trades. Price drop... LAST CHANCE MAKE OFFER ...RIFLE is beautifull and well worth asking...but make offer... as when ad expires, that's it!
