WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 MUSKET WITH PROVISIONS FOR THE SABER STYLE BAYONET
Description: 27 inch barrel chambered in 44 RF caliber. This musket has the rarely seen bayonet lug. George Madis details specifics about production numbers of these muskets. “One of the rarest of 1866 models is a musket with the fitting for a saber bayonet. In total production, less than 10,000 muskets were produced, according to a count made in the mid 1930s. In the count mentioned above, it was found only one of each fourteen muskets had fittings for a saber bayonet. Muskets such as this are very rare, and it is estimated that less than one-thousand muskets were made to accommodate a saber bayonet. He goes on to say that saber bayonets are also very rare. Receiver is a deep untouched pale yellow patina. Sharp corners. Crisp tight action. Bbl has traces of blue turned a plum/brown with VG markings. Orig sights. Excellent bore. Stock has some extra figure to it as well as numerous mars and dings but has 75-80% orig lacquer finish complete with a brass buttplate. Forearm has some dings as well and what appears to be a repaired crack on the right. Noticeable but doesn't look too bad. The screw heads on the bbl retaining bands have been filed off for some reason. Other than that it is untouched. Nice gun!
