1873 TRAPPER SADDLE RING CARBINE WITH FACTORY 15” BARREL
Description: 1873 TRAPPER SADDLE RING CARBINE WITH FACTORY 15” BARREL. Much more scarce than either the 1892 or 1894 Trapper Carbines, the 1873 is one of the most difficult in the Trapper line to locate at any price or condition. This example came off a ranch in Sedona, Arizona where it was kept for many years. Obviously, this one had quite a long and useful life as it is in very well used condition. The stock has a very dry and weathered appearance, as does the correct special short forend that measures just under 8 inches- these short carbines were fitted with corresponding short forends. The receiver, barrel and magazine are now an uncleaned deep aged patina. About all the barrel markings are worn away except for a few scattered letters from the Winchester address and patents that are only visible in good light. They are, however, located ahead of the barrel band, which is correct. The barrel also retains the correct carbine rear sight with slide intact and correct carbine front sight. The receiver is equally dark and worn with the tang markings visible, but weak. The serial number is also very weak with the first two numbers hard to decipher. I believe there is a chemical that can be applied to the metal to bring forth worn serial numbers. The lever catch is intact. There is also a very old repair to the lower tang under the lever as well as some kind of solder repair to the brass lifter. Mechanically, everything functions fairly well. The hammer is worn so that when the bolt is run to the rear, the hammer doesn’t quite make it far enough back to bring it to full cock- fairly common. The saddle ring staple is intact, but the ring is gone as is the dust cover. The bore is dark with visible rifling, but could be rated only fair at best. Has the correct brass sliding door in the butt plate for cleaning rods with only the little "thumb nail button" in the sliding brass part missing. So, in all we have a real 1873 15” Trapper Carbine that came out of Arizona (and probably Mexico before that), is typically very hard used condition…but, it is the real thing! No doubt, lots of history in this one.
