Antique 1873 Winchester 38-40 Caliber. Octagon Barrel. Excellent Bore.
Description: SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester rifle. 38-40 caliber with excellent bore. Here is a pretty decent 1873 Winchester. S/N 422962 and made in 1891.. It has the standard 24" octagon barrel. It is in the excellent shooting caliber 38-40. The bore is excellent bright and shiny and has no pitting but does show a few minor semi circular ares of VERY minor roughness. Very strong and sharp rifling with lots of shine and no rings or bulges. This gun shoots as accurate as it did when it was new. Very hard to find bores this nice and bright.. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. NO bulged cases and NO backed out primers. Head space is perfect. Perfect hammer notches on the safety and full cock. The metal is a smooth medium to dark brown patina that has never been messed with. There is a some spots of pitting on the right side of the receiver and side plate. Nothing that detracts from the gun at all. All the markings are excellent but the caliber markings on the brass carrier are worn off that is common on these because of the brass being soft. All the screws are sharp and clean but the upper tang screw shows some turning but nothing major at all. Still has the original dust cover that is still fairly tight and retracts perfectly with the lever throw with no binding on the action. This gun has the smoothest action and works perfectly. The sights are not original as the front sight is a newer replacement and the rear is a period of use replacement and not as new as the front sight. Still has an excellent sight picture and neither of the dovetails were altered in any way so you could install original sights if so desired. The wood could use some help on this one. The forearm has a full length repaired split on the bottom as you can see. Also shows some grain splits and slivers missing as you can see also. The forearm is still tight to the gun and is very solid with nothing loose. The butt stock has a chip out of the right side by the corner of the butt plate as you can see. This would be a very easy repair for someone good with wood working. Has a small chip that is repaired on the top in front of the butt plate{see photo}. that is very solid and well done. Also has a very tight and very minor surface grain split on the right side as you can see. It is very tight and minor and is hard to see but I want to mention it for a complete and accurate description.{see photo}.. It is not split clear through and is just on the surface... The butt stock fits tight and full to the metal all around.. This gun could use a better forearm and it would help the looks of it if so desired. All in all, not a bad gun and if you are a shooter, then this is the gun for you. I have it priced with the sights and wood in mind but the bore makes up for a little of this but still have to price it reasonable. It is what it is !!!! Like I said, this gun shoots as good as new and would make a fantastic shooter and no worries about putting a scratch on a $3000 73 draging it through the woods. A very solid gun all the way through and many years left in this one for shooting and not a bad low end grade collector. With better forearm and original sights, this one would easily bring $2000. It is hard to find these even in this condition that I can sell this cheap with excellent bores. !!! Don't miss this one if you are a shooter !!! Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping. Thank you for looking and check back often and please see my other items for sale while you are here. SOLD Antique: Yes |
