Antique 1873 Winchester 38-40 Octagon Barrel. Very Good To Fine Bore.
Description:
SOLD..Antique 1873 Winchester 38-40 octagon barrel. Here is a nice 1873 in the excellent shooting caliber 38-40. S/N 335635 and made in 1890. Has the standard 24" octagon barrel. The bore is very good to fine. Shows sharp rifling all the way through with just some minor roughness but NO big pits or craters and NO rings or bulges. The mechanics are excellent and it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. No bulged cases or backed out primers. Head space is perfect. It shoots great and still very accurate. All the markings are very good. Stll has the original dust cover that is still tight in the rear position but is loose in the forward position as most are and it should be retracted by hand. It stays in the retracted position when firing and in no way does it effect the function of the gun if it is retracted by hand. The metal is an aged medium to dark brown patina that does not look like it has been cleaned on or messed with. Has a very small spot of pin prick pitting on the left side of the frame and that is it. Has some dings on the forearm cap on the right side.. Has some dings on the barrel on the left side below the caliber marking and a very small chip that bleeds over into the forearm {see photo}. Must have had some storage rack damage but nothing bad or detracting. Thes are NOT tool or vice markings as there are none on the other side.. Just honest storage dings. Shows no abuse but just honest use. Still has the original front and rear sights. All the screws are very clean and sharp and not all burred up. The wood is pretty nice with the forearm fitting tight with a small and tight grain crack on the left side. Not real noticeable and is till tight and solid. Just something these ole Winchesters will show if they have been used and not have set in a gun rack all their life. The butt stock is very nice with some nice lookin grain pattern on the left side as you can see in the photos. Would be beautiful if it was lightly cleaned if so desired but I am not touching it. Does show a small chip on both side of the upper tang and a small sliver on the lower tang. {see photos} but still a nice looking stock. Wood has the normal honest handling dings and scratches but nothing that really detracts from this ole 73. Very honest 73 here and all original and not messed with.
