Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 Caliber. Octagon Barrel. Nice Bore. Traces of Blue. Fine Wood. Excellent mechanics.
Description: SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 caliber with octagon barrel. A really nice antique 1873 Winchester. It is in the very sought after 44-40 caliber also with the standard 24” octagon barrel. Earlier third model S/N 193730 and made in 1885. This nice 73 has not been messed with and looks great. The bore is very good with strong rifling and some very minor roughness from black powder use. Rifling is still very visible at the muzzle and is not washed out like so many you will see from improper cleaning with the metal cleaning rods issued with these guns. Shows some shallow roughness and frosting but no big pits or craters and it shoots great. No rings or bulges. The barrel is the earlier and slightly heavier barrel than the later 44's. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly and very smooth. No bulged cases or backed out primers and head space is perfect. Both safety and full cock notches on the hammer are perfect and positive. The hammer still has bright vivid case colors on the inner face where protected. The metal is a smooth medium to lighter brown patina with no pitting but a little pitting on the rear sight. Has some light traces of blue on the receiver around the side plates and on the lower tang where protected. Some dings on the top of the receiver behind the dust cover rail.. Still retains the original dust cover that is still very tight and retracts perfectly with the lever throw. Barrel address markings are excellent as is the upper tang and S/N but the 44 cal. marking on the barrel is a little light from handling but still very readable. The caliber markings on the brass carrier are no longer visible just from honest wear and handling. Has both the original front and rear sights. The wood is excellent on this gun. The forearm has no splits or cracks and fits full and proud to the forearm cap and the sides of the receiver. Fits even with the bottom of the receiver from carry wear at the balance point of these guns. Shows honest dings and scratches but no issues. The butt stock is perfect with no splits or cracks. Fits very full and proud to the sides of the receiver and lower tang. Fits perfectly even with the upper tang. Fits completely full and slightly proud all around the butt plate as well.. NO slivers, splits or cracks anywhere and is very nice wood on this gun. Has a few minor dings and scratches from honest use over all these years but never sanded, cleaned on or messed with in any way. The screw heads are very crisp and clean with a couple showing some turning and the rest show no turning or use at all. The worst one is the carrier lever spring screw as you can see. All are serviceable and nothing stuck or frozen tight. These are very easy to replace if so desired. If I have one in my parts stock I will try to get it replaced with a better looking used one. This is a very nice looking and shooting 1873 in the configuration that everyone wants. I try very hard to keep my prices reasonable and the condition to higher standards.. Will come a day when guns like this will be bringing $3000. When I list these 73's they do not last long and I usually have 4 or 5 callers on the gun AFTER they have sold so do not waste time thinking about it if you are interested. Thank you for looking and check back often as I have more quality antique firearms to get listed. $50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. SOLD Antique: Yes |
