Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 Octagon Barrel. Very Good Bore. Excellent Mechanics.. Some Finish Remaining. MFG 1888.
Description: SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 octagon barrel. A very nice and clean 1873. It is in the most sought after 44-40 caliber. Has the standard 24” barrel. S/N 274299 and made in 1888. The bore is very good and clean with strong rifling all the way through. Shows some very minor roughness but no big pits or craters and no rings or bulges. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly with no backed out primers or bulged cases. Shoots good for a 44-40..The finish is thinning but the barrel still shows very good traces of blue remaining. I would say about 20% scattered thinning blue on the barrel. Some brighter blue in the protected areas around the rear sight, on the bottom flats of the barrel and right above the forearm channel. The receiver has toned to a light plumb brown patina with some thinning blue on the left side and around both sides of the hammer. I would say probably 10% or so over all receiver blue. The lower tang has about 75% brighter and deeper blue where protected by the lever. Thinned out in the S/N area as you can see. The balance of the metal is a smooth plumb brown patina and never cleaned on or messed with. No pitting. Barrel has a very small ding on the right side. Does not detract at all from this very nice 73. The case colors on the hammer have silvered out but the inner face has all the bright and vivid case colors. The lever has faded to a light brown patina. Has the original front and rear sights with the rear being the flat top design and original sight elevator. Has the original dust cover that is still very tight and not at all sloppy and loose like most you will find. Still retracts perfectly with the lever throw. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. All the markings are excellent and crisp. The screw heads are for the most part very good but some do show some turning but all are very serviceable and nothing too bad but the main spring screw on the lower tang is a little burred. That is the worst screw on the gun by far. Some of the screws show no turning or being burred up. The wood is very nice but has been cleaned and some varnish added over the years as you can see. The forearm fits very tight, full and proud to the metal. Fits about flush on the bottom by the receiver... No splits or cracks and shows a couple very minor dings and scratches from normal use and carry. The butt stock fits very tight and mostly even with the metal. Just a hair shy on the upper right side where it meets the receiver. It fits full and mostly proud at the lower tang and perfectly even on the upper tang. Some varnish also added at some time in the past.. NO splits or cracks and even fits perfect at the toe area where most of these will show quite a bit of wear and are chipped out. Shows some normal and very minor dings and scratches. The wood as you can see is beautiful and has that nice orange color as when new. Over all, this is a very nice and crisp 73 that still has a little finish remaining. It shows no abuse or bad spots. Perfect mechanics and a very nice bore. Here is one for all you 44-40 lovers out there at a reasonable price. Not near as nice as the 38-40 I have listed but not as much money either.!!! This ole 73 is way better than the gray brown guns you see and priced about the same... Good deal here folks !!!! Hard to find these that I can sell at reasonable prices.. I keep paying more and more for guns like this.. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping. Don't miss this one... Thank you for looking and check back often for more good deals.. SOLD Antique: Yes |
