Antique 1873 Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine 44-40..... Special Order Nickel Plated With Factory Letter 1883.
Description: SOLD...Special order nickel plated antique 1873 Winchester saddle ring carbine. A most honest 1873 SRC 100% original and complete. Factory letter states nickel plated. Caliber is 44-40. Standard 20” barrel. S/N 115198 so it is a fairly early 3rd model MFG in 1883. Letter states in warehouse March 7th 1883 and left warehouse the very next day. This ole 73 has seen some used but never abused. The bore is very nice with sharp clean rifling all the way through and shows just frosting and minor roughness. NO big pits or craters and NO rings or bulges. The bore on this gun is well above average for a SRC as most of these are rougher than a cob. The over all finish of this gun shows some original nickel finish remaining. The barrel and mag tube has no finish remaining. The receiver has very good traces of nickel on the side plates and around the side plates where protected. The hammer has about 75% nickel. The lever has traces of nickel also. The brass carrier still has some flakes of nickel remaining.. I have had this gun apart for cleaning and inspection and all the internal parts are nickel plated as well. The inside of both side covers has most all the nickel finish as does the carrier lever, ect.. The balance of the gun is a cleaned gray color with some scattered pin prick to mild pitting but nothing deep or too bad.. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects just fine.. No backed out primers or bulged cases. The gun is still accurate for a 44-40.... Still retains the original rear SRC sight marked 1873. Original front sight.. . Original dust cover that still retracts with the lever throw and is still reasonably tight. Original saddle ring and stud. The screw heads are still very good and sharp and nothing burred up but some do show some minor turning. All are very serviceable. The wood shows use but not abused. The forearm fits tight, full and proud to the receiver but is just even at the bottom from carry and saddle wear. Nothing underside, sanded on or messed with. It does show the typical grain split on the very front of the forearm where the wood is thin. {see photos }.. This is very common on this model. Shows some common and minor dings and scratches. Nothing detracting at all.. The butt stock fits tight and mostly even with the metal but a little shy at the upper tang from normal wear and shows a small sliver out on the upper right tang as you can see in the photos. Dings and scratches also and a very small and tight grain split off of the upper rear tang as you can see in the photo of the upper tang markings. It is less than one inch long and really not worth mentioning but I want to write full and detailed descriptions..The butt plate is pitted and I can send photos of this or any other area you might want to see. The wood at the butt plate is still full and proud to the butt plate.. No chunks or slivers missing in the toe area. Not bad wood at all but does show some use around the upper tang as you can see. The markings are very good and all readable but the upper tang marking is a little light and shows wear from handling. Barrel address markings are very good and all in tact. NO caliber markings on the barrel or brass carrier as this is totally correct for early 3rd models. I have had these 73's up into the 118,xxx range with no caliber markings and all is correct. You do see some of these 73's with special order nickel plating as it was thought to hold up to the elements and black powder better than the blue ones. It probably did do it's job as intended but nickel finish does wear. Makes you wonder what this gun would look like if it had not been nickel plated!!!! All in all, this is not a bad ole SRC. Has a very nice bore and traces of finish. It has been used but not abused and it still shoots and functions great. . It is a most honest gun and not messed with or altered.. Most of these SRC have seen a very hard life and tremendous amounts of hard use so I think I have this one priced very reasonable as per condition.. Factory letter included of course. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping. Thank you for looking and check back often.. SOLD Antique: Yes |
