Antique Special Order Second Model 1873 Winchester 44-40. Traces Of Blue.. Very Nice Bore. Shotgun Butt. 26" Barrel. Factory Letter.
Description: SOLD...Antique Special order 1873 Winchester 44-40 second model.. Here is a nice special order 2nd model 1873 Winchester. In the sought after 44-40 caliber.. This one has a special order 26” round barrel and shotgun butt plate. Winchester factory letter confirms these features and the gun is totally correct. The 26” barreled 73's are actually more rare than the 28” because when ordering special length barrels, they usually ordered 4 inches over standard length than just 2 inches over. The S/N is 85072 and made in 1882. The bore is very nice. Has the original early 5 grove rifling that is still very strong and deep with very little roughness. Absolutely no big pits or craters with just very mild roughness and no rings or bulges.. The gun shoots great and is very accurate. The mechanics are excellent.. Very crisp and tight like new action.. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly and is very smooth with no hang ups or stiffness at all. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. No backed out primers or bulged cases so the head space and chamber are excellent .Original dust cover that retracts correctly with the lever throw and is still tight like new fit to the screw on dust cover rail with no slop or wobbles like most of these early 73's have. Still retains the early bushing bolt face. The markings are all excellent. The gun has generous traces of blue in the protected areas all along both sides of the forearm on the barrel, on the lower tang as you can see, around the hammer on the top of the receiver, around both side plates and on the bottom section of the barrel where protected by the mag tube. The face of the hammer has all the bright vivid case colors. The metal is all smooth with no pitting but some light staining from age and honest use. Has the original early correct shorter rear sight with the cross hatch checkering on the sides. Front sight is original but the blade looks like maybe a copper replacement. It is shaped perfectly to the original blade but has a slightly different color.? The sides of the barrel have some dings or hash marks that have barely got into the wood.. These do not look like vice marks because they do not have the same pattern from one side to the other and they do not line up to each other perfectly. They are very light and can hardly feel them with your finger nail. Beside that, if you had it in a vice you would have the forearm wood removed !! Very minor but needs to be mentioned for a complete and honesty description. All the screw head slots are clean and sharp and not all burred up from tinkering. The wood is real nice.. The butt stock is perfect with no splits or cracks and fits tight like a glove to all the surrounding metal. Never cleaned or sanded on. The forearm has about a two inch grain split on the right rear as you can see. It is tight and very solid and not going anywhere. It has what looks like one starting on the left rear but a close look says it is just a light scratch in the grain and is not a split in the wood. Other than the split it has no other issues.. It also fits very tight and flush to the metal. Never sanded on or messed with. This is a very nice and honest special order second model 1873 that has seen honest use but no abuse with a little finish and with a great bore for shooting if you so desire. Much better than the dirty brown ones with rough bores that are all over the place out there. Factory letter is include of course. I can only put up 15 photos in the class I am in but I can take many more photos for you of anything you want to see and send them directly to you. I want happy customers !! Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos.. I welcome them.. $50 insured shipping in the U.S.A. Over seas will be more of course. Thank you for looking and God Bless America...
