Antique Winchester 1873 2nd Model. MFG 1879. 44-40 Round Barrel, Very Good Bore. Excellent mechanics. Correct and Honest Gun.
Description:
Antique 2nd Model 1873 Winchester. Here is a pretty nice early 2nd model 1873. Caliber is in 44-40 and has the standard 24” round barrel. S/N 40260 and made in 1879.. This ole 73 still has generous traces of blue in the protected areas. Mostly on the lower tang. Has some blue on the bottom of the barrel and the top of the mag tube where they protect each other. Also traces of some thin blue on the sides of the receiver. The balance of the metal is a smooth medium brown patina with no pitting. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly and is still very accurate. No backed out primers or bulged cases. The bore is very good with very strong rifling No bad pitting but mostly frosted and no rings or bulges.. Still much better than the average bore you usually see in these antique Winchesters. It has all the correct 2nd model features including the screw in mag plug, the dust cover rail screwed to the receiver and the bushed bolt face for adjusting the head space if needed. No caliber markings on the barrel or the bottom of the brass carrier as is correct.. It does however have a later 3rd model rear sight but is a correct Winchester sight. Front sight is correct. Has the original dust cover that is still fairly tight and retracts perfectly with the lever throw. The wood is very good but for the old tack holes neatly placed. ??? There are 5 on both sides of the forearm. 3 on both sides of the stock at the wrist and 5 on the top of the comb.. Don't know what that was all about but it is what it is.. I guess you could put them back in you you want to ??? No splits or cracks and fits tight all around the metal. Just shows honest use.. There is a small hole at the bottom toe as shown in the photos ?? One small nick on the bottom of the forearm below the forearm cap with a couple minor light dings in the cap... The name H.W. Harvy is very nicely carved in the left side of the butt stock.. I had a friend do some research on this name and he found two in this time period.... Census shows one in Kansas from 1860 to 1890 and one in Texas from1870 to 1900. He went on to say that there are quite a few with the name W.H Harvy but only two H.W. Harvy. Also in the trap door for the cleaning rods {no rods } is a old note stating how a fellow acquired this gun. I guess he won it in a pool game in 1946 for a $15 bet. Too much to type but a very interesting story and if you are interested you can call and I will read it to you.. I can make most of it out but a few words.. The fellow I bought this gun from told me it was in there.. It does look to be very old. Had to dig it out with a piece of wire. This is just a little about average 2nd model 1873 that show honest use with a nice bore and is honest and complete.. Much better than the rougher and beat up ones with pitted out bores that you will see for sale in this price range. Plus it has a very interesting story to tell with the name on the butt stock and the note in the stock trap. You can make up your own story about the tack holes.. Old Indian gun ?? NO,, It is in way to good a condition to be one of those.. Don't miss this one !!!! $60 insured shipping.. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions of more detailed photos.
