Documented Factory Engraved 1873 Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine Nickel & Gold Fancy Stock .44-40 SRC 1881
Description: Extraordinary Documented Factory Engraved Gold & Nickel Plated 1873 Winchester Second Model Saddle Ring Carbine with Fancy Stock & Factory Letter, .44-40 WCF, mfg. 1881. A truly stunning highly embellished '73 carbine in outstanding condition. Factory letter confirms all features as follows; "Carbine, Nickel & gilt, Fancy stock, Rear sight as near receiver as possible, Engraved $5.00, Received in warehouse September 22 1881, Shipped from warehouse September 23 1881". Likely the work of John Ulrich the gun is profusely engraved in elegant flowing scrolls with punchdot background and distinct floral clamshell motif on the frame sides. The left sideplate features a vignette of a leaping buck in the wilderness while the right depicts a stag standing amongst the scrollwork. The scrollwork continues onto the barrel at the breech, top of the frame and dustcover, buttplate, and barrel band sides. Frame, dustcover, and buttplate retain approximately 80%+ bright gold gilt finish with some light thinning. The entire balance of the gun including the barrel and magazine tube, sights, hammer, trigger, lever & locking nut, carrier, loading gate, saddle ring & stud, and screws are nickel plated. These components retain approximately 90% bright nickel finish with scattered flaking and surface oxidation forming. Lower tang stamped "XXX 681" with matching assembly number "681" additionally stamped on the stock within the upper tang channel and on the buttplate. Fancy deluxe stock is highly figured with vibrant grain and smooth piano finish. Excellent condition overall with no chips, cracks, or repairs and very little surface marring. Wood-to-metal fit is generally good to excellent overall excepting for just around the buttplate tang which shows a minor gap likely resulted from careless disassembly. Three-piece cleaning rod included which has correct measurements except the length of the pieces indicate that they are from a rifle kit. All original screws, saddle ring, post front sight, and flip-up leaf rear sight which as the letter indicates is positioned "as near receiver as possible". The leaf is presently frozen and will require some careful soaking to free up. It seems apparent this gun must have spent a great many years stored away somewhere but saw very little actual use. Clear two-line Winchester address, model designation, serial number, and "44 CAL" marked carrier. Action is very crisp and functions perfectly. Dustcover tends to hang up a bit when closed. Very good bore with generally bright sharp rifling throughout, light blackpowder frosting overall, and fine pinprick pitting/oxidation at the muzzle. An absolutely gorgeous factory engraved Winchester that will be a highlight among even the most advanced collection. Winchesters of this quality and condition are an extreme rarity and represent the highest tier of collectibility. - Payment by bank wire only, please expect 2 weeks additional shipment time for secure fully insured Registered Mail.
