Rare and unique 1st Model Winchester 1873 .44-40
Description: Offered here for the advanced collector is a very rare and unique 1st Model Winchester 1873. Early serial number 3699 is a 28” octagon barrel rifle with a custom Winchester factory stock 2” longer than standard, made without provision for a cleaning rod. It has a scarce 1st Model raised thumbprint dustcover, "Rocky Mountain" front sight, set trigger, and a bore that rates 7 on a scale of 1-10. The wood likewise is good with a few mars on the right side, and the metal is patina, but it is missing the lever latch. What makes this gun special and noteworthy apart from it's for configuration, is that it is featured prominently on four separate pages (133, 134, 216, and 361) in James D. Gordon’s remarlable 2 volume book “Winchester’s New Model 1873: A Tribute” published in 1997. Only 1,000 copies of this remarkable book were printed, and I was fortunate to get a copy; today this book will set you back as much as $1,000! This particular piece was in the Little John’s (Anaheim, CA) n of Gordon’s life time collection of Winchester 1873’s on May 19, 1998, and all of those guns have appreciated significantly since then when they become available. Included is Gordon’s original 1992 factory letter from Cody (Winchester) showing this rifle was shipped from the warehouse April 24, 1875. NRA Rating: Very Good: All original parts; none to 30% original finish; original metal finish smooth with all edges sharp; clear lettering, numerals and design on metal; wood slightly scratched of bruised; bore disregarded for collectors firearms. Contact the seller with any questions, or for additional information. SOLD Antique: Yes |
