Winchester 1873 Deluxe
Description:
Presented here is a Deluxe '73, manufactured in 1882 as a second model. Dovetail blade and elevation adjustable sights are on a barrel marked with the two-line address/patent dates information ahead of the rear sight and "44 WCF" at the breech. The serial number is on the lower tang, and "44 CAL" is on the brass cartridge elevator. Special order single set trigger. The highly figured and checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock feature an ebony grip insert and trapdoor buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX 4204," and "4204" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate. Cody Firearms Records Office serial number confirmation states this rifle had a 1/2 octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock and casehardened finish when received in the warehouse on April 25, 1882 and shipped on May 12, 1882. Finish on gun is original blue, which indicates a factory record error.
Condition Extremely fine, retaining 85% plus bright original high polish blue finish with the bottom of the forend cap and most of the bottom of the magazine tube a dark brown patina. 80% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate, and 95% original case colors remain on the hammer, lever and buttplate. The wood is very fine with slight chipping near the toe, a hairline crack in the grip area (left side), minor handling evidence and most of the original finish. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically excellent. Outstanding example, especially at 137 years of age!
