Winchester 1873 Special Order Half Nickel in .38-40
Description: The Item: 1887 Winchester Model 1873 Special Order Half-Nickel Rifle in .38-40 Accessories: Cody Firearms Museum COA Letter Condition: NRA: Very Good Blue Book: 75%+ Additional Information: This fine antique Winchester Model 1873 came in from a local Colorado estate. A letter from the Cody Firearms Museum was attained and so the rifle looks to be in original condition as delivered from Winchester. Produced and delivered in 1887, it is a special order rifle with half-nickel finish on the receiver and buttpad. It features an octagon 24" barrel, tiger-striped walnut stocks, lever safety, serrated top cover, original buckhorn rear sight, original leaf front sight, and crescent buttpad. The buttstock seems to be an especially nice piece of tiger-striped walnut and so may have been a deluxe grade of wood. No visible cracks noted, and the finish seems to be original. Forearm is in great shape too with only one good nick on the LH side. The receiver retains about 30% of its original nickel finish, and the crescent buttpad retains about the same. Blued parts have darkened to a nice brown patina with no active rust and just a little surface pitting here -and-there in the length of the barrel. Barrel is original 24" length (not cut) and the bore is still fairly shiny. Rifling has smoothed out near the muzzle, so it has been shot a bit. Action is still fairly tight for its age and cycles like a dream. Lever lock works well and hammer springs are still tight. The special order Winchester rifles of this era are extremely rare and difficult to find in this condition. The .38-40 caliber and nickel finish set this particular rifle apart from the rest and would make an excellent addition to your Winchester collection. ://gun-data/winchester_73.htm SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1873 Serial Number: 224175 Caliber Info: .38-40 |
