Winchester M1873 .38-40 - 1902, 26” FULL OCTAGON, vintage firearms inc
Description:
General Specs: Winchester, Year 1902, .38-40, 8lbs. 9oz., LOP 12 7/8"
Serial Number: 561586B
The Winchester Model 1873, known as “The Gun That Won the West”, was produced from 1873 through 1919 with a total of 720,000 made. The Model 1873 was the first lever rifle developed to fire a centerfire cartridge…the .44 WCF, or .44-40, which became immensely popular for hunting and protection throughout the west. By 1879 the rifle was chambered in .38 W.C.F. (.38-40, a Colt SAA compatible cartridge). The Model 1873 was eventually produced in caliber .32-20 and .22 rimfire. One of the advantages to these calibers was Colt always followed suit chambering their Colt Peacemaker revolver in the same calibers as the Model 1873 so a person could have one bag of bullets that would supply his rifle and revolver…handy when there were no stores! The 1873 was first built with an iron frame (and after 1878 a steel frame) rather than the brass frame of the Model 1866, making it lighter and less expensive to build. Search the internet and you will find many 1873 rifles for sale in one stage of condition or another with values between $500 and $50,000. What sets one apart from the other? What makes one more desirable than the next? Condition is certainly important, as are special-order features, rifles that are fully operational, able to be safely and accurately fired at targets or game. This Model 1873, sn561586B built in 1902, checks all those boxes. She is a Third Model and was special-ordered with a 26” full octagon barrel, documented in the Cody Firearms Museum information sheet that comes with the rifle and is shown in the photos. The standard rifle came with a 24” barrel. Only 1 out of every 600 Model 1873 rifles were special-ordered with a longer than standard barrel…very desirable indeed. This rifle retains all original parts, and the finishes are mostly all there. There is pinprick pitting here and there on the metal, but for the most part the gun is in very good condition. The bore retains strong rifling from muzzle to breech, shiny in appearance with very mild scattered pitting. I would rate the bore as a solid 7 out of 10. The wood is in excellent condition, fitting up to the action superbly with no chips, cracks or major dings, and there is no place where metal is proud to the wood. The action operates flawlessly, having been stripped to the smallest part, all parts Ultrasonic cleaned and scrubbed, inspected for function and integrity, lubricated, and reassembled, making this a VFI Certified gun with a 90-day mechanical warranty. The screws are all excellent, near perfect, and there is still some case color showing in the lever and hammer. THIS RIFLE IS READY TO SHOOT, THE RIFLING WILL SPIN A BULLET ACCURATELY DOWN RANGE, AND .38 W.C.F AMMUNITION IS READILY AVAILABLE. She doesn’t have to be “for display only”! Winchester Model 1873 rifles have continued to gain value, and the .38-40 cartridge in the long 26” barrel was the most accurate of the big bore M1873 choices. This is an investment quality firearm at a price that most enthusiasts can afford. What a great addition to your collection and I would certainly have to take a nice whitetail with the rifle before the next season was over. Thanks for looking!
