Winchester model 1873 44-40 caliber rifle. Dated 1883, 20 inch barrel, serial number 122610A.
Description: This Winchester 1873 First Model Carbine is a lever action rifle chambered in 44-40 Winchester manufactured in 1883. It features a satin oil finish black walnut straight grip stock, with scattered non-structural lengthwise shrinkage cracks and classic carbine-style forearm with blued steel barrel band. The Winchester 1873 Carbine also offers an about 60% blued steel 17.5” barrel, blued steel carbine strap butt-plate and saddle ring, full-length tube magazine, and steel trigger and trigger guard. Bore shows some darkening in the grooves, good riflings. Mechanically fully shooter functional with sliding thumb-print receiver dust cover. Barrel marked, "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860. 44 W.C.F.". Tang marked, "Model 1873". Buffalo Bill carried a Model 1873 and a pair of .44/40 Colt revolvers when he scouted for the Army in 1876. An Arizona sheriff named John Slaughter! doted on a Model 73 carbine. Forensic ballistics have revealed that Native Americans used eight Model 73s at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. The Apache leader Geronimo’s brother-in-law Yanhoza and son Chappo carried 73s. Frank James, brother of Jesse, used a 73. These are the men of whom we know. Others who swore by their Winchesters carried them as they lived and died. The Winchester Model 1873 has become the rifle of the Old West and has come to symbolize that place and time. But the people who bought it did not think in such exalted terms. To them, the 73 was simply a rifle you could trust with your life.
