Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle in 38-40WCF
Description: Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle in 38-40WCF
This is a Winchester Model 1873 Rifle in 38-40WCF. It has a 24" full octagon barrel and full length magazine tube. It has walnut stocks crescent butt plate with trapdoor, buckhorn rear barrel sight and blade front sight.
Condition:
The condition of this Winchester 1873 rifle is very good to fine overall. This rifle retains about 70% of its original metal finish with it thinning at the edges faded to an even brown patina over the balance. There is some slight spotting and very mild pitting in some places. The bore is mostly bright, crisp, and sharp rifling with some spots of fouling mostly toward the muzzle. The bore would rate +8/10. The legends remain strong and with the brass lifter having a mild aged patina to it with the caliber marking strong. The screw heads for the most part in fine condition with some showing slot wear. The stocks are also in fine condition and show some scratches and a few dings from use. The rifle cycles a round well and locks up tight and is in excellent mechanical condition although a little stiff in cycling. The rifle would benefit from a good cleaning the action in particular has dried old oil which is the reason for the stiff feel of the action. I cleaned some of this out and it improved the cycling. Further cleaning would eliminate this issue.
This Model 1873 was made in 1902 and it is chambered for 38WCF as stated in the factory letter. The Winchester proofs on the barrel and receiver are proof marks not used until 1905. This is indicates that the rifle was returned to Winchester for a factory repair. It can be assumed that the factory repair was a replacement barrel as indicated by the “new” proof marks. This rifle comes with a factory records letter indicating it was produced in its current configuration, received in the warehouse in September 24, 1902 on order #160361
These Winchester 1873 rifles and carbines still remain popular even after 150 years and are still made by Winchester/Miroku, Uberti, and a few others. They are a popular model rifle for Cowboy Action Shooting. But there is still a demand for originals and ones in good shape are increasing in value. This one was manufactured in 1902 and although used was very well taken care of and ones in this condition are getting harder to find.
