1873 Winchester Rifle and Scabbard
Description: Calvin Rivers half Chippewa and half German 1873 Winchester rifle, shortened to carbine size, with Native decorated case showing State of Minnesota, portrait of stag, and the year of 1890. Rivers lived near the Red Lake Indian Reservation and was known as a market hunter, guide, and poacher, formerly a US Army Scout. He was active in the l880’s and 90’s, then disappeared from Minnesota in 1902. Handmade, copper beaded sighting in the barrel, chambered for 32-20 cal. Action is good, bore is good. The name C. Rivers is carved in black letters near the plate. A ribbon is attached to the scabbard with "USS," which is a partial scout’s ribbon. SOLD Antique: Yes |
