SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 38-40 caliber, octagon barrel. Here is a very nice 1873 Winchester. S/N 285288 and MFG in very early 1889.. It is in the very accurate 38-40 caliber. Has the standard 24” octagon barrel. To start with,, the bore is excellent and near mint condition. Very mirror bright and shiny with just a few small spots of minor roughness. Way above an average bore on this ole 73 and getting so hard to find with minty bores. This is why I have had this gun for 10 years as I love excellent bores and the 38-40 caliber.. No rings or bulges.. This gun shoots as good as the day it was made... The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. No backed out primers and no bulged cases. This is a shooter for sure. Out of my collect and have owned it for 10 years. The metal is a smooth medium brown patina with no pitting. Has a few minor dings on the receiver. This gun does have traces of original blue finish in the protected areas around the side plates on the receiver, on the lower tang around the trigger and some on the barrel around the front sight. There are some small hash marks on the barrel around the rear sight on both sides. They are lighter on the right side.. Hopefully you can see them in the photo of the left side forearm photo and I can take more photos of them close up if you want to see them better. They do not look like vice marks but who knows. The barrel has not been changed so I have no idea what they are from. Still has the original dust cover that is still tight and retracts perfectly with the lever throw. All the markings are excellent. Original rear sight. The front sight maybe an old KING marked replacement with an ivory bead but may be original as you could order any style of sights on these guns. Looks great on the gun and has an excellent sight picture. The wood is good with the forearm having an excellent repaired full length grain split on the bottom and a chunk repaired at the rear left side {see photo of bottom and left side forearm}.. Not real noticeable but they are there and want to mention the repairs. Still fits full and tight to the metal. The butt stock is much better. Has a very small chip on right upper side {see photo of upper tang }.. The rest of the stock is very nice with no splits, cracks or repairs. Still fits tight and never sanded on or messed with. The screw heads are still sharp and clean and not all burred up from tinkering. I know this ole girl has a few warts but has a bore that makes up for them in my opinion. The only reason I am selling it is I just have too many 73's with lots more finish and several with minty bores so I have to let this one go to someone who wants a fantastic shooter and will like it as much as I have over the years. Reasonably priced also as per condition. Getting hard to find that I can sell for less than $2000... $50 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. I do not answer the phone much anymore as the tele marketers are getting so bad but I do check my messages throughout the day so leave a message and I will return your call. Of course e-mail works good so either way you can reach me. Thank you for looking and check back often. More guns to get listed soon.
