Winchester 1873 Rifle in 44 WCF
Description:
Winchester 1873 Rifle in Caliber 44 WCF aka 44-40. Standard Sporting Rifle with 24" Octagon Barrel, Full Magazine, and Crescent Rifle Buttplate with Trapdoor. Includes original 4 piece cleaning rods. Serial number is in the 228,000 range and according to Winchester Records, this went into the warehouse on 3-8-1887 as a 44 Caliber Rifle with Octagon Barrel and shipped on 7-28-1887 with order number 21328. This rifle came to us indirectly from the original family through a mutual friend whose interest was more in Civil War and Military Collecting than old Winchesters. Over the years, we've had a lot of 44 Caliber 1873 rifles but this is one of my all time favorites. It is fairly untouched and while it has a lot of thinning powdery original blue left on the frame and barrel mixing with patina, my favorite thing about this rifle is the walnut wood! It is light reddish orange with nearly all of the original varnish intact and has perfect wood to metal fit. It has a great deal of eye appeal in my opinion. The markings are all nice with a perfect dark butter scotch patina on the bronze loading block that reads "44 CAL." Original everything on this rifle...dust cover, sights, even the screws are all original. Nice action with a Very Good Bore. Original 4 piece cleaning rods are the real deal, not recent additions, and came in this rifle from the original family. If you're looking for a good solid example of a Winchester 1873 rifle from the 1880's for your collection, this one has "that look" to it!
