Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine in 44-40
Description:
Sale Pending. Nice example of a Winchester Model 1873 3rd Model Saddle Ring Carbine in Caliber 44 WCF aka 44-40. Antique Serial Number in the 236,000 range and was made in 1887. Standard working man's 1873 SRC with 20" round barrel, full magazine, semi-crescent carbine buttplate w/trapdoor for the cleaning rods (not included), saddle ringe, 200-900 yard ladder sight with "1873" at the top, quartersawn walnut stocks, and dust cover. These carbines offered 13 rounds of firepower and were used mainly as utility guns that were designed specifically for use on horseback. Today, nice clean carbines like this are becoming fairly difficult to find as they account for only 1/3 of 1873 production and most show extensive wear. They were popular in the American West but were also shipped all over the world. This particular carbine has literally been around the world in its lifetime as it bears tiny Victorian era London Proofhouse marks and most likely went on to a British Colony in perhaps India, Africa, or Australia. It was fairly well looked after as the stocks are in nearly fine condition with nice metal that displays nice edges and distinct markings and knurlings. Even the "44 CAL" on the brass loading block is good and legible as these are often worn away. The metal has turned to a nice smooth brown patina with small traces of original blue in protected areas around the saddle ring and rear sight. The wood is solid with no cracks or repairs and has nice fit up to the metal with old open grain having never been cleaned or sanded. The action is crisp and feels nice and tight. Lever still snaps shut and stays up, firing pin still indexes like it should and the bore is Very Good Plus that is still fairly bright with nice lands and grooves. Definitely a few notches above your average worn out carbine. You will not be disappointed with this one! Antique, Pre-1898, No FFL required under Federal Law. Please know your state and local laws before contacting us. We do not export, sorry. Buyer must be 18 years of age and legal to purchase. 50.00 shipping. 3 Day inspection. Sale Pending.
