Winchester Model 1873 Third Model Rifle
Description:
Offered for sale is a 1873 Third model Winchester Lever Action Rifle. This is a very represenative Winchester that would be a great gun to start a collection or to use as a shooter. This gun was manufactured in 1889 in 38 WCF (38-40) one of the most popular calibers for this model. Equipted with a 24" octagon barrel, a full length magazine and Buckhorn rear sight (elevator is missing), it is mechaniclly sound and functions flawlessly. The bore is dark, but without any sighs of rust or pitting. The rifling is strong and smooth.
The stock and forend are stained dark Winchester Red and are solid with no splits, cracks or chips. There are the normals, dents and handling marks that your would expect on a gun of this age. The left side of the stock bears what appears to be a backwards "R" and the right side a two and two initials carved into it.
The metal surfaces of the gun are sound with no pitting on the recriver which retains aproximately 35% of the original flinish. The barrrel is free of any major dents or dings and shows about 50% blue with some small corrosion marks mainly on the two left side flats. The magazine shows aproximately 15% blue in protected areas.
All together the gun would rate a little above average for guns in this class and age.
