Description: 1876 45-70 OCTAGON RIFLE, #56XXX, MADE 1887. A good example that shows a mostly gray/brown patina on the receiver with some blue in the most protected areas. Good blue on the loading gate, original dust cover, aged and thinning blue on the 28” barrel with exc. markings and fitted with the correct 1876 dated ladder with slide sporting rear sight and small Winchester blade front sight. Exc. butt stock with tight wood to metal fit shows the lightest of handling only. The forend has what looks like a deep scratch for a few inches along the top left side that may be a very shallow crack that goes nowhere. Gray-brown magazine tube. Tight action with strong safety half-cock on the hammer. The bore shows strong rifling all the way through with some scattered pitting. Mellow brass lifter shows some usual dings and is marked “45-75.” This big 139-year-old frontier Winchester shows use, but no abuse. Attractive appearance.
