A VERY UNUSUAL 1876 WINCHESTER WITH 20" OCTAGON BARREL
Description:
Early 1st model rifle that has been fitted with a dust cover. Pictured on page 221 of the George Madis Winchester book by serial number. He explains that the gun had a standard 28" barrel but before it left the factory it was returned and barrel was shortened and provided with a set trigger. At that time it was converted to 45-60. We can only assume that it was shortened to the 20" length at that same time as well. Base that assumption on the fact that the muzzle end looks to have always been a 20" barrel. Rifle was made in 1877 but was not shipped from the factory until July 17, 1880. Gun has sharp corners, correct sights, excellent mechanics and correct dust cover. Metal is a plum /brown with traces of finish in the protected areas. A very rare unique gun.
