EARLY 2ND MODEL WINCHESTER 1876 with Interesting Factory Info
Description: DESCRIPTION: Winchester Model 1876 lever action rifle in caliber 45-60, blued finish, walnut stocks, standard 28" round barrel, full magazine and crescent butt with trap door butt plate, plain trigger, German silver blade front sight and correct 1876-marked long ladder rear sight, correct 2nd model screwed-on dust cover rail and thumb print dust cover intact (many were removed or changed out later on by collectors who prized these as they are hard to find). Factory records housed at the Cody Museum indicate this rifle, serial # 5953, started out as a 45-75 rifle with an octagon barrel warehoused on October 09, 1878, but sat in inventory and was changed to the "reduced charge" 45-60 round, which was quickly developed after the company received many complaints of excessive recoil from the 45-75 round. The rifle was then shipped from the warehouse on March 26, 1880 to order number 19489. Further discussion with the Cody Museum indicates this rifle was likely in the first batch of 45-60 rifles shipped after the cartridge was developed. CONDITION: All metal surfaces have aged to gray with some light surface staining but no pitting. Hammer has traces of the original case hardening colors. Trap in butt functions but no cleaning rods are present. Walnut stocks show multiple dings, scratches and compression marks as well as someone's initials on the left side of the butt stock and some kill marks on the underside toe line of the butt stock. Amazingly the stocks are still tight and even with the metal, void of any splits, cracks or extra holes. Bore is very good with some brightness and nice consistent rifling as well as light typical black powder spotting but no rings, no bulges, no deep pits and should spin a bullet just fine if you are so inclined to use her as she was intended. Brass carrier block is a mellowed ochre and has not been cleaned. Action functions as it should, including the half cock safety, but the lever does sag when freed from the lever latch. Grades NRA Antique Good and a copy of the pictured Cody Museum email sheet will be included with the rifle. TERMS: No international sales. Antique so it can ship directly to you assuming your local laws allow it. 3-day non-firing inspection. Buyer pays return shipping. Payment by bank check, money order or personal check. All major credit cards accepted with 4% convenience fee added. Sold as a collectible only and should be checked by a competent gunsmith if you intend to shoot it. Trades and offers considered.
