Winchester’s First Single Shot Rifle Made in 1893

Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Rifle, chambered in .22 Short, made in 1893 in New Haven, Connecticut. Ironically, this was Winchester’s first single shot rifle, the company having been founded on its winning lever action repeater design. John Moses Browning, the famed gun designer who forever changed the firearms landscape, began his career with this rifle in the 19th Century before dominating the world scene in the 20th Century.

The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.”. The rear of the barrel is marked “22 Short”.

The overall condition is good. Traces of the blue finish remain amidst a mixed gray-brown patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows wear and remains solid. The bore is in good shape. The action is strong.
