EARLY 1885 HIGHWALL .32-40 OCTAGON RIFLE, #5XXX, MADE 1886
Description: EARLY 1885 HIGHWALL .32-40 OCTAGON RIFLE, #5XXX, MADE 1886. The 30” No. 3 barrel blue has aged to a mottled mainly brown. The barrel is fitted with a flat top buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar along with a Rocky Mountain blade front sight. All markings are good. The receiver is a mottled dark color with some shallow surface dings on the receiver ring. Very tight action with strong safety half-cock and strong hammer and lever springs. The stock and forend show handling marks and both are solid with good wood to metal fit. There appears to be a very small wear spot just in front of the toe by the butt plate- not a chip, a wear spot possibly from being in a saddle scabbard where the butt plate rubbed. The forend shows some nice grain pattern and has the original ebony wedge inlay in the tip. The bore is in surprisingly fine condition considering the age of this one and shows strong rifling all the way through with only some very surface scattered corrosion that might brush out. Lots of life left in this 140 year old single shot!
