LETTERED Antique WINCHESTER Model 1885 HIGH WALL Rifle in .45-90 WCF Cal.
Made in 1891 with 3 Weight Octagonal Barrel
Description: LETTERED Antique WINCHESTER Model 1885 HIGH WALL Rifle in .45-90 WCF Cal. Made in 1891 with 3 Weight Octagonal Barrel Here we present an antique Lettered Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle chambered in .45-90, made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Winchester Model 1885 has a falling-block action, and two models were produced, the Low Wall and the High Wall. Ironically, this was Winchester’s first single shot rifle, the company having been founded on its winning lever action repeater design. John Moses Browning, the famed gun designer who forever changed the firearms landscape, began his career with this rifle in the 19th Century before dominating the world scene in the 20th Century. It was produced principally to satisfy the demands of the growing sport of long-range "Match Shooting", which opened at Creedmoor, New York, on June 21, 1872. Target/Match shooting was extremely popular in the United States from about 1871 until about 1917, enjoying a status similar to golf today, and the Winchester company, which had built its reputation on repeating firearms, had in 1885 challenged the single-shot giants of Sharps, Remington, Stevens, Maynard, and Ballard, not only entering the competition, but excelling at it, with Major Ned H. Roberts (inventor of the .257 Roberts cartridge) describing the Model 1885 Single Shot as "the most reliable, strongest, and altogether best single shot rifle ever produced." This specimen is chambered for the high powered .45-90 cartridge. It features a 30-inch #3 weight octagonal barrel. The letter states that factory records had this being shipped in .45-70. The barrel has been remarked after the chamber was lengthened for the .45-90 conversion. The overall condition is fine. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The walnut stock shows some use and remains solid. The rifle comes with its original front sight but currently installed is a globe type sight. The rear barrel dovetail has been filled in favor of a tang-mounted peep. This is a very neat and scarce Winchester! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches. Caliber: .45-90 Winchester Center Fire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $4485 #226844 SOLD Antique: Yes |
