Win. MODEL 1885 LOW WALL SINGLE SHOT OCT. RIFLE
.25-20 SS CALIBER, #47XXX, MADE 1891
Description: MODEL 1885 LOW WALL SINGLE SHOT OCT. RIFLE IN .25-20 SS (SINGLE SHOT) CALIBER, #47XXX, MADE 1891. This is a nice uncleaned rifle that has that "attic condition" appearance of a rifle that was just put away and left for decades. The wood is excellent but retains 133 years of grime over the nicer than standard grain pattern with the classic reddish-brown walnut Winchester was famous for. It also retains the ebony wedge inlay in the front of the forend. Wood to metal fit is tight. The 28" barrel shows fine aged blue overall with sharp markings, buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Winchester blade front sight. The breech of the barrel is marked "25 W.C.F." This has the correct for caliber No. 1 weight barrel and is so marked on the bottom flat ahead of the forend. These light barrels required a "flute" in the top of the receiver ring for better sight viewing, and this one has that flute only seen with No.1 weight barrels. The receiver is an uncleaned mottled dark patina, exc. screws, tight action, and strong safety half-cock. The fore shows good lightly worn rifling with light corrosion throughout. This might be a good one to reline or rebore to .32-20 or .25-20 repeater. An attractive rifle as is.
