Description:
Winchester 1885. This is a plain sporting rifle that was special ordered from the factory with checkering on both the butt stock and forearm. ( John Campbell, in his book on the 1885's, said on pg. 173, that checkered straight grip rifles are more rare than pistol grip ones. Just his opinion. ) It was also special ordered with a 28" barrel. Standard length was 30". A serial number search letter states this and will be included. Caliber is 40-65 with a #3 weight barrel. Twist rate 1-20. Bore condition is rated at an 8 out of 10. A caliber survey was done by a noted Winchester authority on 1885's, as he had access to Cody's records, and his findings were that out of 106,300 rifles, ( which took 10 years of research ) only 562 were chambered for the 40-65 Wood is very good to fine. No dings or dents. It has not been refinished. I did have the barrel rust blued and some light to moderate pitting removed near the muzzle. Also had it re-color cased. ( work done by Al Springer, Snowy Mountain Gun Restorations. ) I have added a correct Lyman "S" tang sight ( valued at $200.00 ) and a Beach front sight ( valued at $75.00 ) The iron sights that came on this rifle when I got it will be included. $2600.00 plus $60.00 for shipping.
