WINCHESTER EXPERIMENTAL HI-WALL RIFLE IN CALIBER 22 SHORT
Description: I believe this to be a chamber pressure test gun. It is very similar to several others that I know of. One is a 35 Winchester self loading cartridge and another is a 401 self loading cartridge. These were made for Winchester semi-automatic rifles. This one is very similar to those two and just a few serial numbers away from them and in the same condition. I am familiar with those but have never seen this one before. It is interesting that it is in 22 short. There shouldn't be any chamber pressures to worry about but I imagine that to be used in a semi-auto rifle it has to be specific. That is my theory on it. Gun is in fine condition with virtually all the blue. Stock has most original varnish with just a few minor dings. Good case colors on the hammer and lever. It is in the 113k serial range. Round barrel is 24 inches. Muzzle end says "22 Cal Short Rimfire" and nickel steel barrel. Probably a #4 barrel or close to that. On top there is no Winchester legend but it says"CHAMBER FOR 22 SHORT. DIA OF BORE .291" DIAM. OF RIFLING .224"/3 [triangle] TWIST 1 IN 20" LENGTH OF BARREL 24" FIT RECEIVER NO 1./USE YOKE NO 1. DIAM OF PISTON HOLE .146" NICKEL STEEL. 1912.". There is 2 holes on the side of the barrel near the receiver and a small hole in back for what I assume is for checking chamber pressure. It was made without an extractor. Gun comes complete with several original factory drawings for demonstration purposes. Also some magazines showing a couple other similar guns and some information on these types of guns. A very interesting gun. Would be another great addition to any Winchester Collection.
