Winchester 1886 OBFMCB 45/70 Gvt, 17XXX (1888), very good bore
Description: #4919 Winchester 1886 OBFMCB 45/70 Gvt, 17XXX (1888), very good bore (7 on a scale of 10) and VG action. As can be seen in the photos, this gun has been totally cleaned to crisp, upitted, bright metal ….except for the barrel which is still a thin plumming blue-brown patina and fine markings. (Obviously, some previous owner REALLY liked this Black & White combination, and while quite attractive, it should be returned to a more sedate look). The exterior is therefore just “VG” with the exception of the wood, which is near fine, although also been finished in black with a high gloss. The standard open rear sight is a mid-heigth buckhorn sporting sight and the front is the “pinched blade”. Even though finished in this odd manner, this Winchester is still a very decent ’86 and WELL worth a small bit of effort to remove the stock finish and apply a faux patina to the metal to give it a natural look. The 45/70 caliber was one of the most popular and best “heavy hitters” of that era for most all hunting in North America, and still has good enough ballistics for heavy brush hunting for modern day shooters. There are lots of pictures of this neat old gun, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. Certainly one of the few early 1886s around that are in 45/70 with a decent bore that are still under $3000-$3500. About VG++ (as refinished) $2495 SOLD Antique: Yes |
