Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle, made in 1892 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Model 1886 was a collaboration between John Moses Browning and his brother, Matthew Sandifer Browning, to build a big game rifle to replace the Model 1876. This was Browning’s first repeating rifle design adopted by Winchester. The 1886 rifle, often called “the best rifle in the world”, even made Theodore Roosevelt, later President of the United States, very fond of the large caliber Model 1886 repeating rifle during his western adventures on the plains.
From 1886 through 1935, almost 160,000 carbines and rifles were produced with calibers that ranged from the smaller .33 WCF to the largest, .50-100 WCF, with the most popular caliber being the .45-70 WCF and the .45-90 WCF. This rifle was a great improvement over the Model 1876. Its shorter, streamlined frame proved very popular and was well received by sportsmen, shooters, and law enforcement groups alike. The Model 1886 continued the trend towards chambering heavier rounds and had an all-new and considerably stronger locking-block action than the toggle-link Model 1876.
This is a solid example of a Model 1886 chambered in .38-56 W.C.F. The .38-56 W.C.F. cartridge was introduced by Winchester in 1887 as an attempt to outperform Ballard/Marlin's .38-55 cartridge, which had been around since 1884. These Model 1886s chambered in .38-56 remained popular particularly in the American West for both varmint control and hunting well into the 20th century. The top barrel flat on this example is marked with the standard two-line address and the caliber marking is at the breech. The model designation is marked on the upper tang, while the two-line patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. It is fitted with a German silver “Rocky Mountain” type blade front sight (lower half of sides covered in black enamel) and an elevation adjustable No. 24 “Sporting” notch rear sight (vertical portion filed shorter). It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
The overall condition is fine. Much original blue is preserved. Bright gray patina on the receiver. Excellent, crisp action. Bright bore, strong rifling. Replacement front sight blade. Very nice walnut stock.
