Antique WINCHESTER 1886 Lever Action in .40-65
Description:
Antique WINCHESTER 1886 Lever Action in .40-65
With Half-Length Magazine Made in 1891!
Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle, made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. The 1886 was a collaboration between John Moses Browning and his brother, Matthew Sandifer Browning, to build a big game rifle to replace the Model 1876. This was Browning’s first repeating rifle design adopted by Winchester, and the design even gained the endorsement of Theodore Roosevelt, formerly a staunch proselyte of the 1876.
This rifle features a half-length magazine tube under a stout 25-inch octagonal barrel chambered for .40-65 WCF. The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.” The rear of the barrel is marked “40-65 W.C.F.” The rear sight has been removed and the dovetail filled with a blank in favor of the tang-mounted adjustable peep.
The overall condition is very good. The frame was casehardened and traces remain. The barrel retains about 25% blue finish with a gray-brown patina. The markings are clear. The stock is smooth and solid. The bore is clean with good rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a great example of a very desirable large-bore Winchester in a scarce caliber!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 25 inches.
Caliber: .40-65 WCF
