Rare Marlin 1895 Deluxe Takedown Rifle, Antique Serial Number
Description: This is a scarce Model 1895 Deluxe Rifle with Special Order Pistol Grip Checkered Stock and the scarce Take Down Frame. Standard 26" Octagon Barrel, Full Magazine, and Crescent Rifle Buttplate. Caliber is 40-82. It also has a desirable Pre-1898 Antique Serial Number in the 137,000 range. Serial numbers start at around 131,000 for this model (All Marlins shared the same consecutive serial range) so this one is probably first or second year production. Marlin only made the original Model 1895 from 1895 to about 1917 with just 18,000 units produced. To put that into perspective, the Model 1886 Winchester Rifle, this Marlin's main competitor, outnumbers the Model 1895 at an almost 10:1 ratio. Today, a Model 1895 is a scarce and desirable gun and the deluxe and takedown features put this rifle on another level. During the latter half of the 19th Century, traveling out West by Train became popular for many hunters. Magazines like Forest and Stream (aka later as Field and Stream) had advertisements from Railroads offering trips out West for hunters living in the East. This is where the takedown frame came into play as this rifle could be broken down and either placed into a custom luggage case or a soft canvas case for ease of travel. Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Fine+ to Excellent witih 50-60% fading case colors on the receiver and 97% original blue remaining on the barrel and magazine tube. The wood retains 95% original varnish with very good checkering that shows light usage that isn't worn down. No cracks or repairs but does show some handling marks including what looks like a boot spur once rolled across the right side of the forend....which is not uncommon on 19th century rifles. Fine Plus wood overall and Exc. Wood to Metal Fit. The takedown mechanism works and is still very tight. Excellent Bore. Original Sights include the Marlin Ballard Rear Sight and the Standard Rocky Mountain Front sight with German Silver Blade. This is a very rare rifle in great shape that is priced for about half that of a comparable Winchester 1886 Deluxe Rifle.
