Winchester 1886 45-70 Octagon Barrel w/Factory Letter
Description: Final Price Reduction, Selling At My Cost - Grab It Before It's Gone!!! You are viewing one used antique Winchester Model 1886 rifle in the highly-desirable 45-70 Gov't caliber. This rifle features a 26" full octagon barrel of slightly heavier weight than normal (per factory records, it was shipped as “extra heavy” but quickly returned and repaired where a lighter barrel was installed; apparently the extra heavy barrel was too heavy for the original purchaser and returned it for just a "heavy" barrel). The barrel measures 52/64” across the flats at the muzzle and 60/64” across the flats at the breech – in Arthur Pirkle’s book, the standard barrel measurements are 45/64” for the muzzle end and 54/64” at the breech, which fall in line with Pirkle's notes/measurements for a "heavy" barrel. The barrel definitely "covers" more of the receiver face than a barrel of standard weight (I did compare it to an 1886 of standard weight and the standard barrel was definitely skinnier) but does not stick out past the edges of the receiver as the really heavy barrels do. Also the edges of the front sight do not stick out very far past the top flat of the barrel at the muzzle; usually there is more air under the edges of the front sight. Weight is about 10 pounds, whereas the extra-heavy was about 12 to 13 pounds and the standard version about 9 pounds. Otherwise it is of standard configuration, having a full magazine and crescent butt with typical crescent steel butt plate. The serial # is 113610, so it was manufactured in 1897. Copy of Cody records included with firearm (see last pic). Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks and no extra swivel holes. Forearm has been cleaned and refinished but not sanded and still fits well. Buttstock shows normal dings and scratches but is still tight and also fits well all around, thankfully not refinished. Action is smooth as butter and live rounds feed from the magazine tube flawlessly. Bore is absolutely fantastic, a 9 of 10, is not re-bored and it should be a fantastic shooter once it's checked over by a competent gunsmith. Case colors on receiver gone and have all silvered out as they commonly did. All markings are clear and correct. Barrel exhibits 65% plum blue with a small area near receiver that had some sort of gunk chemically cleaned away but was not scratched. Mag tube shows about 10% plum blue with the balance being silver/gray. Sights include a flat top rear that is of a later era but does have the correct early thumbprint elevator without the patent date and a Lyman #4 hunting front sight which is mentioned in factory letter as being original to the rifle. 1886s are always high on the collecting priority list, especially in this caliber, so don't let it slip away!! No international sales please. Being an antique, this can ship directly to you assuming your local laws allow it; need copy of driver's license for proof of age (21 and over please). Payment must be via money order, bank check, or discreet PayPal. 3 day non-firing, no-disassembly inspection allowed; return shipping is your responsibility. Ships for free via USPS Priority Mail.
