The Model 1890 was Winchester's first Slide Action rifle, but it was actually designed by John and Matthew Browning. Not bad pedigree for a firearm. The number of Model 1890's produced between 1890 and 1932 is argued to be between 775,000 to 850,000. Winchester tagged it as the most successful repeating rimfire rifle for all around shooting they ever made. It differs from most other slide action rifles by ejecting out the top of the receiver. Unlike other .22 caliber rimfire rifles, the 1890 would not feed all lenghts of cartidges. If chambered for .22 Short, it would feed only .22 Short. Not until 1919 was it chambered for .22 LR. This rifle is chambered .22 Short.
This Winchester Model 1890 has the serial number 631446 stamped on the lower tang and underside front receiver, thus a matching numbers rifle. It is a 3rd version standard take down model that features a modified receiver that allows the breech bolt to lock externally. The entire rifle is original. There is no rust, scratches, peeling, or pitting of the metal. The receiver is showing some patina browning but nowhere on the metal is it worn through except the slide bar and bolt.
The 24" Octagon barrel retains it's near original bore and the action show signs of very little use. The stock and fore grip have no cracks or scratches and very nice finish. The rifle fires and functions flawlessly, and is very accurate.
This rifle could just be the best looking 99 year old in your house!
