Winchester 2nd model 1890 in 22 Long
Description:
This is a second variation model 1890 that chambers the less common 22 Long. The second model 1890 varies from the 3rd, in that the lock lugs on the bolt are inside the side of the receiver when closed. The serial number on this gun is 2062XX which gives it a build date of July 1904. This gun was built prior to the time when serial numbers were stamped on both front and rear halves, which took place around 1906. This is why this gun has only the lower tang serial number. In addition these early 1890's were not proof stamped at the rear of the barrel, or on top of the receiver. The bore of the 24" barrel is dark, with rifling present, but would probably still shoot good. The metal surfaces are fading from blue to a brown patina with the only spot of corrosion being near the front of the loading tube (pic. 13). The wood stocks are in exceptional original condition, showing only minor knicks, with no cracks or repairs. The wood fits proud to the crecent butt plate and tangs, and may have never been taken apart, as evidenced by the nice condition of the screw heads. Gun has the original sight package, functions as it should, and locks up tight. Would make a great candidate for a restoration. Lower 48 states only, unless discussed prior.
