1907 SPECIAL ORDER SHORT RIFLE WINCHESTER 1892 Lever Action .44-40 C&R Rare CODY Letter, SET TRIGGER & 20” OCTAGONAL Barrel
Description: 1907 SPECIAL ORDER SHORT RIFLE WINCHESTER 1892 Lever Action .44-40 C&R Rare
CODY Letter, SET TRIGGER & 20” OCTAGONAL Barrel
Here we present a Factory Lettered Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action “Short Rifle” chambered in .44-40 WCF, made in 1907 in New Haven, Connecticut. This trim factory-custom rifle comes in at 6.3 lbs., features a carbine-length 20-inch long barrel, and has the “close-coupled set trigger” mechanism. Crescent butt plate.
According to John Campbell in his book “The Winchester Single-Shot, Volume I, the Winchester close-coupled set trigger was first listed in the 1896 Winchester catalog. This applies to the model 1892, as well. In practice with the close-coupled set trigger, the shooter cycles the lever action to cock the gun and then pushes (typically with one’s thumb) the rear trigger to set the front. The rifle can then be fired with the trigger unset simply by pulling as with a plain trigger. The pull weight can be adjusted by means of a small screw protruding from the tang behind the rear trigger. This screw increases or decreases the amount of engagement between a hook on the front trigger and a ledge on the rear. Turning the adjusting screw “in” results in less engagement which decreases the pull weight of the front trigger.
The overall condition is very good. Strong, tight action. Very light set trigger. The bore is in good condition: reflective with strong rifling. The walnut stock has a long, thin crack in the right side of the butt stock, running from the upper receiver tang. The right side of the forearm has a thin grafted section along the top. A rarity from Winchester!
