Here we present a Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Lever Action Carbine chambered in .38-40 WCF, made in 1911 in New Haven, Connecticut. Another fantastic design from the mind of John Moses Browning, the 1892 was made to replace the venerable and iconic 1873 and featured its pistol caliber chamberings. The result was a trim and light rifle that was an immediate hit and stayed in production for almost 50 years. Many gun owners favored Winchester rifles for their ability to fire the same ammunition as their pistols, meaning that a cowboy, trapper or stagecoach defender could take along his trust rifle and pistol sidearm with only one supply of ammo!
This saddle ring carbine features a pistol grip stock, a half-length magazine, and a crescent butt plate. The barrel is 20 inches in length and chambered for the .38-40 Winchester cartridge. Carbine front and rear sight with the addition of the tang-mounted peep sight. The pistol grip and the forearm are sharply checkered. The overall weight is a mere 5 ½ lbs., making for a very light and lively, quick long arm that would be a joy to carry afield or stick in the saddle scabbard.
The overall condition is fine. This carbine has been very nicely refinished. The saddle ring has been removed, most likely to eliminate extra noise or to prevent the additional wear on the finish. Assembly numbers match on the stock, butt plate, and receiver tang. Excellent, crisp action. Bright bore with sharp rifling. This is a seldom seen Deluxe variant of the Winchester Model 1892 in .38-40!
