BRITISH ROYAL NAVY World War I WINCHESTER 1892 .44-40 SADDLE RING CARBINE
Dominion of Canada Proof 1915 WWI C&R
Description: BRITISH ROYAL NAVY World War I WINCHESTER 1892 .44-40 SADDLE RING CARBINE Dominion of Canada Proof 1915 WWI C&R Here we present a C&R British Royal Navy Proofed World War I Era Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine chambered in .44-40 WCF, made circa 1914 in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1914 the British Royal Navy purchased 20,000 Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbines and 5,000 Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbines. They were purchased for use on the Royal Navy mine sweepers and coastal vessels at the onset of World War I. Canadian inspectors were sent to the Winchester factory to proof stamp the rifles and they were shipped to the Halifax Naval Yard to be turned over to the Navy. They were reportedly sold as surplus in the 1920s as none have been found with British commercial proofs. Though there is little information available on these guns, there is a documented case where a British seaman engaged a German submarine running on the surface somewhere in the 150 yard range. This is surely the only case recorded of a Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine taking on a submarine in military contact! The Model 1892 rifle was another fantastic design from the mind of John Moses Browning. It was made to replace the venerable and iconic Model 1873 and featured its pistol caliber chamberings. The result was a trim and light rifle that was an immediate hit and stayed in production for almost 50 years. Many gun owners favored Winchester rifles for their ability to fire the same ammunition as their pistols, meaning that a cowboy, trapper or stagecoach defender could take along his trusty rifle and pistol sidearm with only one supply of ammo! The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock shows use and remains solid. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 20 inches. Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Center Fire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING. Will need to be sent to your local FFL or C&R licensee. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $3200 #244257 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
