1894 "FRENCH CONTRACT" .30 WCF CARBINE WITH SIDE MOUNTED SLING SWIVELS, MADE 1914
Description: EXTREMELY RARE 1894 "FRENCH CONTRACT" .30 WCF SADDLE RING CARBINE WITH SIDE MOUNTED SLING SWIVELS, #657XXX, MADE 1914. In the past these were called "Belgian Congo" carbines, but actually they were on a World War I contract with France who later sold some to the Belgians as surplus. Some of those may have later Belgian proof marks. This example is one of the best of the few I've seen over the decades. The receiver shows good aged blue on the sides with some brown mixing. Similarly, the barrel and mag tube show good lightly aged but deep blue. It is in the correct serial range for these and has the correct side mounted sling swivels- the one in the left side of the butt stock is inletted and held by two screws with the forward swivel placed with a holding tab inletted under the barrel band. Importantly, the rear carbine ladder sight is marked on the ladder face "METERS" with graduations going up to 1000. These were all fitted with gumwood stocks and the wood on this one is surprisingly good, showing only normal light handling with very tight wood to metal fit- may have had some stock finish added but not sanded. The action is tight with strong safety half-cock and has an excellent bore that is only a little dark at worst. A rare Winchester and one with great World War I history! SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Rifle Caliber: .30-30 Winchester Manufacturer: WINCHESTER Model: 1894 SRC Serial Number: 657XXX Barrel Length: 20 Condition: FINE Bore Condition: EXCELLENT |
