With Octagonal Barrel & WESTERN 3 Bead Select Sight!
Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle in .30-30, made in 1895 in New Haven, Connecticut.
William F. Sheard was a Montana Territorial gunsmith who was located in the Livingston, Montana Territory from 1884-1895 until he moved to Tacoma, Washington. He patented a unique front sight for rifles for which he later sold the patent to the Marble Gunsight Co.
This rifle has an octagonal barrel of 26 inches. The front sight is a Western with a serrated back side and a very neat feature that lets the user select one of 3 sight beads of various color. One is white, one is black, and one is copper. This would have been useful for shooting in different lighting or weather conditions, perhaps. The 3 different beads are set up in a triangular fashion and has an audible and tangible click when rotated with a finger. The rear sight is a replacement. The original was probably removed due to the fact that there was a receiver tang-mounted peep sight once on this rifle.
The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish and patina. The top of the barrel is marked “FROM W.F. SHEARD/TACOMA, WASH” and “30 W.C.F.” Lower, 2nd year production serial number. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with nice rifling. The walnut stock is in good condition, though clearly used. A very nice antique Winchester Model 1894 that was sold by a notable trader in Montana Territory and Washington State!
