FIRST MODEL, FIRST YEAR, 3-DIGIT WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 "10 O'CLOCK SCREW" RIFLE
Description:
Scarce and desirable Winchester Model 1894 First Model rifle having the famed "10 O'clock Screw" on each side of the receiver. This was the initial John Browning design, where these screws held the cartridge guides in place from the outside. Very early on the design was changed by Winchester so that the guides were held by an internal screw, which only the tip is seen in the 1 O'clock position on the majority of Models 1894. Also this is a 3 digit rifle, #627, having its serial number applied Nov. 13, 1894, making it a true first year rifle. It was warehoused February 1895 and shipped March 1895 (see picture of Cody Museum email sheet, which will be provided to the buyer). Caliber is 38-55 as all the First Models were. First Model serial numbers went as high as about 7,000 but there were many Second Models mixed in, and the exact count of First Models is unknown but estimated at about 5,000. In all respects this is a standard rifle, having the 26" round barrel, full magazine, crescent butt with steel butt plate, open sights, blued and case hardened finish, plain walnut stocks and plain trigger.
CONDITION: Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished, no extra holes, still tight and proud to all the metal, with the letters "AMC" lightly scratched into left wrist. These must have been done a long time ago as they are dark, worn and very smooth. Receiver shows 40% deep original blue with some surface staining. Fore end cap and butt plate have no original case colors remaining and are a silver color. Butt plate shows evidence of light cleaning. Hammer and lever are muted silver with traces of original case colors remaining. Barrel and mag tube show 25% original dull blue with streaky loss due to some sort of chemical being spilled on it. Has not caused any pitting or damage to the metal or wood. Action is tight and half cock safety functions as it should. Bore is very good, a 7.5 of 10, with very good rifling and only very light minor scattered black powder pitting. No rings, no bulges, craters; should spin a bullet just fine. Original front sight has a replaced or modified blade and the rear sight is a slightly later original Winchester semi buckhorn with the thumb print elevator. Mag tube is tight with no wobble. Grades NRA Antique Very Good and will only go up in value over time as these First Models are highly sought by collectors.
