RARE ERROR DATE BARREL WINCHESTER 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine DESIRABLE 38-55 CALIBER
Description: This is a used and rare Winchester Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine with the factory error date barrel in the desirable 38-55 caliber having serial number 343297, made 1906 by the published Madis serial number records. It is a standard SRC having a 20" round barrel with post front sight, ladder style rear sight marked 0 to 20, gumwood stocks, carbine butt, long fore end wood, plain trigger, saddle ring that screws into the left side of the frame, blued and case hardened finish. The error date barrels fall into a narrow serial range of 1906-1907 production and reads "August 14, 1894" instead of the correct "August 21, 1894", which was caused by the die maker mixing the patent dates of the Models 1892 (October 14, 1884) and the 1894. Approximately 70 of these specimens are known at this time, 5 being extra lightweight rifles and the other 65 being carbines, most being found in caliber 30 WCF but I have owned at least 1 of every caliber Model 1894 with this factory anamoly. This specimen is the 3rd in 38-55 I've owned and only 1 of 5 I've ever seen in this caliber having the error date barrel. CONDITION: Back half of the barrel retains 50% bright original blue. Forward half of the barrel has thinned to 10% on top with 50% in the protected areas above the mag tube. Mag tube is 70% bright original blue. Receiver 60% bright original blue with some flaking and a good amount of bright fire blue on the loading gate. Hammer and lever show traces of the original case hardening colors, otherwise are a smoky nickel color, as is the butt plate. Original sights and saddle ring are present. Someone tied a piece of leather around the saddle ring loop to diminish the noise of the ring hitting the receiver. Original gumwood stocks are generally sound with only typical light abrasions, dings and nicks, no extra holes, never cleaned sanded or refinished, and thankfully the fore arm does not have the typical crack forward of the barrel band. Action is tight and crisp with a properly working half cock safety. Bore is very good with sharp rifling, no frost, minor oxidation that may clean out, rated at a 7 of 10 and certainly will spin a bullet just fine after a checkup by a competent gunsmith. Rates NRA Modern Very Good. A scarce carbine that is a must-have for the Winchester enthusiast.
