SPECIAL ORDER 1894 .32-40 CALIBER RIFLE WITH ROUND BARREL AND HALF MAGAZINE, #647XXX, MADE 1914
Description: SPECIAL ORDER 1894 .32-40 CALIBER RIFLE WITH ROUND BARREL AND HALF MAGAZINE, #647XXX, MADE 1914. This was the least produced caliber in the Model 1894 and by the time this rifle was made at the beginning of World War I in Europe, it had been almost entirely replaced with the .30WCF and .32 WS. Half magazines were special ordered by riflemen who knew what they were about- Theodore Roosevelt ordered almost all of this Winchesters with half-magazines- as they tended to be more accurate than those with full magazines because each time a shot was fired and a cartridge moved toward the receiver when the lever was thrown, the weight and vibrations changed which caused group sizes to increase. Also, most hunters didn't feel the need for that many follow-up shots in a magazine while in the field. The extra length magazine and additional rounds added weight to the rifle which could grow heavy by the end of a long day in the mountains. This example shows fine lightly aged barrel blue. The barrel is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar and a Beach folding globe front sight. The receiver blue has aged mainly to brown with some blue remaining on the rear of the left side. and on the loading gate. The receiver screw heads are excellent and the stock and forend show very light handling only with tight wood to metal fit. The bore is excellent with sharp rifling and the action it tight. A difficult caliber to find especially with an excellent bore.
