SPECIAL ORDER 1894 .38-55 RIFLE, ROUND BARREL, HALF-MAGAZINE, #397XXX, MADE 1908
Description: SPECIAL ORDER 1894 .38-55 RIFLE, ROUND BARREL, HALF-MAGAZINE, #397XXX, MADE 1908. A little known fact is that many savvy riflemen, like Theodore Roosevelt, ordered their Winchester lever guns with half magazines because they were typically more accurate than those with full magazines. A full magazine hanging off the barrel and loaded with cartridges changes the “harmonics” of the barrel each time a round is fired and those in the magazine move toward the receiver. This can affect accuracy. Anyway, this example retains fine deep original barrel blue and is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and small Winchester blade front sight. The receiver shows good blue on both sides with some surface freckling/wear on the top center edge of both sides from handling. Fine blue on the bolt upper tang and even good blue on the forend cap. All exc. markings. Exc. stock and forend with tight wood to metal fit. Tight action, strong hammer spring with secure safety half-cock on the hammer. Bore is minty bright and sharp. Some minor case color traces remain on the extreme upper portion of the lever and on the hammer back. Nice special order 118 year old Special order 1894 in a desirable caliber.
