SUPER RARE Winchester Model 1894 38-55 Saddle Ring Carbine ERROR DATE BARREL
FREE SHIPPING
Description: This is a very rare Winchester Model 1894 saddle ring carbine in caliber 38-55, having all the typical SRC features of a 20" round barrel, full magazine, carbine butt, plain trigger, plain gumwood stocks (common to carbines of this vintage - walnut was in short supply and gumwood also saved weight) and standard open sights including the carbine ladder rear, blued and case hardened finish, serial number 340412, made in 1906 per the published Madis numbers. What makes it really interesting and rare is the barrel address, which has the incorrect "error" patent date. The correct patent date for the Model 1894 is August 21, 1894. Somehow during the production of a new roll die for the barrel address marking, someone at the factory mixed the dates of the Model 1892 (October 14, 1884) and the Model 1894, so that the patent reads "August 14, 1894." At this time, there are approximately 65 know examples of this factory error. 5 are extra light rifles and the remainder carbines. Personally, this is the 12th error date carbine I've owned, and only the 2nd in caliber 38-55. I have observed 2 other 38-55 carbines with the error date. There is an old thread on the Winchester Arms Collectors Association that discusses this error, as well as dedicated pictures and text in the two books written by Robert Renneberg about the Model 1894. This error date barrel appears in a very narrow serial range, from about 330,000 to 360,000 and I've never seen it on a standard rifle. Winchester quickly realized the problem and corrected the marking die, so not many of these are around or known about in the collecting circles. Most Winchester collectors I know have never seen one or heard of this marking error. Here is your chance to own one of these factory error carbines that don't surface very often. CONDITION: Barrel retains 10% original bright blue, which is in the protected areas around the rear sight, front sight, above the fore arm wood, and above the magazine tube. Magazine tube retains 50% original bright blue. Otherwise they have drifted to patian. Receiver is mostly a light patina but has 5% bright original blue around the saddle ring and on the lower tang. Traces of original case colors on hammer and lever. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, no extra holes, just light dings and scratches, never sanded or refinished. Loading gate retains some of the original fire blue. Action is crisp and the half cock safety functions properly. Bore is very good, just a hint of frost, no pitting, still a little shiny, just light wear to the rifling, should still spin a bullet just fine, has not been test fired and should be checked by a gunsmith before doing so. Original front and rear sights remain. Grades NRA Modern Very Good. The combination of the best caliber of the model and the barrel rarity make this a must-have in your Winchester collection.
